Social Media Essentials: 5 updates to inform your social media strategy
It has been an exciting week in social media, we have seen Prince George trending on Twitter as Britain followed him on his first day at school, YouTube update their look, LinkedIn have a useful salary comparison tool and Facebook is finally looking to merge Instagram stories with Facebook stories. Check out these 5 social media updates that could help inform your own social media strategy.
1. Spotlight story: Instagram Stories hits desktop
Instagram Stories have announced they will now allow desktop web users to view Stories, and will soon allow you to post to Stories too. Instagram has already copied all of Snapchats’ best bits and has now taken it one step further offering something Snapchat can’t.
Similar to the mobile version, Instagram explains that you’ll see stories at the top of your feed, and you can tap to watch them. To skip or go back to a story, you can tap the right and left arrows.
They also announced that in the coming months Instagram will allow users to upload stories via the mobile web. This feature will be helpful for professional photographers and videographers who go the extra mile by editing their images and videos before sharing.

2. YouTube gets a make over
YouTube has rolled out new features to its mobile app and has a new logo. They also announced that the desktop redesign introduced this past May is now available to all users around the globe. They have introduced a new design, videos that move with you, ability to speed up videos, adaptable videos to your screen and browse other videos while you watch. As well as these new feature YouTube have also updated their logo, for a simpler design.
3. LinkedIn Salary
Salary talk makes most people uncomfortable, but LinkedIn says it doesn’t have to be. They have launched LinkedIn Salary. This will provide the right information to help you discover your earning potential. It will provide a detailed breakdown of salaries by job title and location, helping you understand how location will impact your salary. You can also dig deeper into compensation insights about specific companies you’re interested in.
4. Facebook stories to merge with Instagram stories
Techcrunch has reported that Facebook is looking give users the option to share their Instagram Stories directly to the Facebook app. Instagram has since confirmed that the feature is in testing. This isn’t surprising as the Facebook feature hasn’t taken off, and doesn’t receive the same engagement as Instagram stories. Instagram users are already able to share individual photo or video posts to their Facebook News Feeds, so this would be the next natural move.
5. New Instagram face filters
Instagram has released new face filters that reflect how you’re feeling with weather-inspired filters. You can share your emotions through a happy sun, a sad rain cloud, an angry thunderstorm or a laid-back sun. We all love a good face filter.
